12V DC 5 Amp Power supplies provide a lot of current and are used mainly to power Security DVR Recorders and multiple cameras. When being used to power multiple cameras a 1 to 4 DC Power Splitter can be used. If you use the power splitter, the current is split in to 4 cameras and is sufficient to power CCTV cameras with up to 42 IR LEDs up to 100ft away.
Another reason for using a 5 amp 12V DC power supply is when you have a 1 amp consumption camera located more than 300 feet away, you will need more current from the power source to account for amperage and voltage loss as the current travels the length of wire. Depending on the camera's power consumption, a 5 amp power supply may work.
